In The Garden

It all started when...

I found out that I could have a large display case in the foyer of a local library for the month of April to display some of my art. In talking to one of the library staff members about what art would be appropriate, her comment was "Well, Spring is starting... maybe flowers." A strong love of nature and the garden has always been present throughout the years in my work, but this time I decided to especially create a series of fantasy flowers. I created a bunch and when it came time to install them in the case, a few were too big, but it all worked out. I used rocks from my garden as a base since these were not your ordinary flowers. Each one is uniquely different, totally unreal, out-there, and whimsical, all at the same time. A friend had come to visit while I was creating them and she commented that they reminded her of Jim Love, a sculptor who in the 70s had created huge, gigantic flowers for a show at a Houston gallery. She encouraged me to do more, and I can't seem to stop. Besides the ones in the library installation, I have an entire fantasy garden which the few people who have seen them are also encouraging me to do more. They contain broken garden implements, screws, bolts, buttons, funnels, tea strainers, cooking utensils, shells, and stuff that I don't know what it originally was. The library is located in a low-income neighborhood, so my intent was to inspire children and adults visiting the library to see the possibilities of creating art out of recycled stuff. Also included are some sculptural pieces with the Garden theme.
